Shanghai does everything at scale
The Shanghai International Circuit was built to impress and still does: grandstands that tower over the pit straight, a back straight more than a kilometre long and a first corner that tightens and tightens until the cars are almost stopped. It rewards a car that is good everywhere and a driver who can manage tyres, and the long straight into the hairpin guarantees overtaking. Rain is never far away in April.
Beyond the circuit is one of the great cities of the world. The Bund at night, the towers of Pudong across the river, the old French Concession’s plane trees and cafés, and food that runs from dumpling houses to the finest dining in Asia.
