The weekend

A chess match at 300 kilometres an hour

The Hungaroring is the thinking fan’s circuit. Narrow, twisting and relentless, it is often called a street circuit without the buildings, and overtaking is hard enough that the race is won in the pit lane, in the strategy room and in the tyre choices. The order can change completely without a single pass on track. It is July, it is hot, and it rewards the complete driver over the brave one.

Budapest is twenty minutes away and one of Europe’s great weekend cities: the Parliament lit up over the Danube, the thermal baths, the ruin bars of the Jewish quarter and dinner on a terrace above the river. We book hotels on the Pest side with the river in view, seats or hospitality at the circuit and the transfers between them, and an Elite host is on hand all weekend. Bring an appetite.

What it’s actually like

The heat shimmers off the tarmac, the cars snake through the infield nose to tail, and the race turns on a single pit stop you watch unfold from the grandstand. Budapest in July is Formula 1 at its most tactical, and its most beautiful.
