The weekend

The original night race

Singapore invented night racing, and nobody has done it better since. The Marina Bay circuit runs under thousands of lights past the Fullerton, the Padang and the floating platform, with the skyline glowing behind the grandstands and the humidity making it the most physical race of the year for the drivers. Twenty-three corners, no straights to speak of, and sixty-odd laps that always seem to end under a safety car.

The city makes a festival of it: concerts inside the circuit after the sessions, hawker food at two in the morning, rooftop bars with the track below and Sentosa or Orchard Road to fill the days. We book the hotels on the circuit, the grandstands or hospitality by the bay and the transfers, and an Elite host is with you throughout. It is the easiest Grand Prix in Asia to love.

What it’s actually like

The skyline lights up, the humidity settles, and the cars come past the Padang in a blaze of floodlight and sparks. Then a concert, a rooftop, a bowl of laksa at midnight. Singapore is the race the whole city stays up for.
